When your home is cluttered, it can be difficult to relax and unwind. The stress you feel at home may start to affect other parts of your life and even your health. There’s no time like the present to declutter your home. Once your possessions have been narrowed down and your home is tidy, you unlock new possibilities for your space.

1. Start With Clothing

Many of us have more clothing than we need. Clothes are easy to accumulate until you run out of space to put them. Start in this department when you declutter your home. You will free up space in your closet for other items.

Remember the rule: if you haven’t worn it in six months, get rid of it. If you are vigilant about purging your clothing, you will successfully complete the first step of decluttering.

2. Don’t Be Afraid to Discard Things When You Declutter Your Home

There are a few reasons why you might decide to get rid of something. One is that you don’t use it. Just like the clothing rule, the six-month guideline applies to other items in the home.

If you have multiples of certain items that aren’t necessary to keep, this is another good reason to let it go. Lastly, if the item doesn’t have a purpose and is not sentimental to you, there is no reason to keep it. There are many charitable organizations where you can donate your unwanted items to people who need them.

3. Store Papers Electronically

All the papers you keep and incoming mail can quickly turn into clutter. Even a filing cabinet can easily become a mess.

The best thing you can do to limit papers is to invest in a scanner and save documents electronically. Back up your computer with an external hard drive just in case! There are only a few important documents you should keep hard copies of, like birth certificates and your house deed.

4. Give Everything You Keep a Home

Once you have gotten rid of everything you don’t need or want anymore, it is time to organize all the remaining items in your home.

The key to keeping your home organized for good after you declutter your home is to designate a place where every single item in your home belongs. Keep like items together so it is easy to find things. When you put back everything in its place after use, your home won’t go back to being a cluttered mess.
